WHY COVER LETTERS GET SKIPPED
Three ways a cover letter loses before it is read
A recruiter working through a stack of letters for one opening can tell within a sentence which ones were written for the job. These are the three failures that give it away.
The cover letter that fits every posting
Change the job title and the company name and it can go to anyone. It praises your adaptability, your communication skills and your passion, and it names nothing the posting asked for. A recruiter has read that letter before, and the one thing it proves is that you did not read the ad.
The cover letter in the wrong country's format
A German recruiter expects a DIN 5008 subject line and an Anlagen line at the end. A Spanish one expects no subject line at all and a salutation that ends in a colon. Translating an American letter word for word keeps the American shape, and the shape is what reads as foreign.
The hour it takes to do it properly
Re-reading the posting, picking the two or three things worth arguing, rewriting the opening so it does not start with I am writing to apply. Done well, that is a real chunk of an evening. Per application. Which is why most people stop doing it well by the fourth one.
HOW IT WORKS
Posting in, cover letter out, in four steps
The letter is generated alongside your tailored resume, from the same posting and the same profile. There is nothing extra to fill in.
Paste the job posting
The full text or the URL. JobAlign reads it once and uses it for both documents: it pulls out the job summary, the key requirements and the required skills.
Import your LinkedIn profile
Your experience, titles, dates, skills and education come across in one click. This is the evidence the letter argues from, and it is not allowed to invent anything outside it.
The cover letter comes back in the local format
Pick the language, the tone and the length, and optionally the one requirement you want the opening paragraph to answer. The structure follows that market's conventions, not a translated template.
Edit it, then download
Rewrite anything you want directly in the app; your edits are kept. Download the letter as a PDF, take the resume and the letter together in one ZIP, or copy the text into an application form.
BEFORE / AFTER
Same candidate, same resume, two cover letters
One posting: Customer Success Manager at Northwind Systems, a SaaS company, with enterprise onboarding, Salesforce reporting and product feedback named as the three priorities. Here is the letter most people send, and the letter JobAlign writes.
The template cover letter, sent as-is
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my strong interest in the Customer Success Manager position at your company. I am a dynamic, results-driven professional with excellent communication skills and a proven track record of exceeding expectations in fast-paced environments.
Throughout my career I have consistently demonstrated leadership, adaptability and a genuine passion for delivering value to clients. I am confident my skills would make me a valuable asset to your organization.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Nothing in it names this posting. Swap the job title and it goes anywhere, which is exactly how a recruiter reads it.
The JobAlign cover letter, written from the posting
Dear Hiring Manager,
Northwind's posting puts enterprise onboarding first, and that is the part of the job I have run for the last four years: a book of 40 accounts in the same seat-count range, taken from kickoff to first renewal without a handoff.
You also ask for Salesforce, and for someone who builds the health-score reporting rather than consumes it. I built ours (the renewal-risk dashboard my team still works from on Mondays) and wrote the onboarding playbook the four CSMs hired after me were trained on.
The third requirement, working with product on churn feedback, is the reason I am applying: I have done it informally for two years and would rather it were in the job description.
Same profile, same resume. Three paragraphs, three requirements from the posting, and every claim traceable to something on the LinkedIn profile.
THE DOCUMENT, PART BY PART
What a US cover letter from JobAlign actually looks like
Not a preview mock-up: these are the blocks the generator emits, in the order it emits them, with the US conventions applied.
- Sender
-
Maya Okonkwo
maya.okonkwo@email.com
(617) 555-0147Your name, then email and phone, one item per line. No mailing address is invented. The block carries only what your profile actually has.
- Recipient
-
Northwind Systems
The company name, with the contact's name on the line above it when you supply one. JobAlign never invents a person, a title or a department.
- Date
-
March 12, 2026
US long form, month spelled out. It sits after the recipient, never before it. Your city appears only if your profile has one.
- Subject
-
Application for the Customer Success Manager position
A single line naming the role. If the posting carries a requisition number, add it to this line yourself before you send. The generator names the role and nothing else.
- Salutation
-
Dear Hiring Manager,
What you get when no name is supplied. Type a name in and it becomes Dear Ms. Alvarez, instead. The model is never allowed to guess one.
- Body
-

Two to four paragraphs depending on the length you choose, each making one point and backing it with a fact from your profile. It never opens on I am writing to apply.
- Closing
-
Sincerely,
The US letter closes short. It does not repeat the salutation in full the way a French lettre de motivation is required to.

Maya Okonkwo
Your full name, and nothing after it: the US letter carries no enclosures line, unlike the German Anlagen or the Dutch Bijlage.
One page, single column, contact details in the body rather than in a header, and a clean text layer, so it survives being pasted into an application form. The guide explains what belongs in each paragraph.
EIGHT MARKETS
A cover letter written in the language, not translated into it
Each market has its own letter conventions encoded in the product. Here is one marker from each: the kind of detail a translated template always gets wrong.
-
English (US)
A subject line naming the role in one sentence, "Dear Hiring Manager," when no contact is known, "Sincerely," to close, and no enclosures line at the end.
-
French
The closing formula repeats the salutation word for word: "Je vous prie d'agréer, Madame, Monsieur, …". A bare "Cordialement" belongs to email, not to a lettre de motivation.
-
German
DIN 5008: a subject of at most two lines that never spells out the word "Betreff", "Mit freundlichen Grüßen" to close, and an "Anlagen: Lebenslauf" line at the very end.
-
Spanish
No subject line at all, and the salutation always ends in a colon, never in a comma, as in "Estimados señores:". The body starts on its own line.
-
Italian
Unlike German, "Oggetto:" is spelled out in full, and the letter ends on the GDPR consent line Italian recruiters expect: "Autorizzo il trattamento dei miei dati personali …".
-
Portuguese
No subject line either: the reason for applying is carried by the first paragraph. "Exmos. Senhores," opens it and "Com os melhores cumprimentos," closes it.
-
Dutch
"Onderwerp:" is written out, and what follows the colon starts lowercase. "Met vriendelijke groet," closes the letter, followed by a "Bijlage: curriculum vitae" line.
-
Polish
"Z poważaniem" stands on its own line with no comma and no period, and the salutation never carries a surname: "Szanowny Panie," alone, never "Szanowny Panie Nowak,".
The file is named in the letter's language too: anschreiben-…-jobalign.pdf for a German application, carta-presentacion-… for a Spanish one.
WHAT YOU GET
A cover letter that agrees with your resume, down to the dates
The letter and the tailored resume are generated from one profile against one posting. They are not two documents that happen to be about the same person.
Written from the posting, not about you in general
JobAlign reads the posting for the job summary, the key requirements and the required skills, then argues your profile against them. It reuses the same highlights it selected for your resume, so the two documents never contradict each other on a title, a date or a number.
Your tone, your length, your opening
Sober, warm or direct. Short, standard or detailed: from two paragraphs to four. And if one requirement in the posting is the one you want to lead on, name it and it gets the opening paragraph.
Eight markets, eight real structures
English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Polish, each with the subject-line rule, the salutation, the closing and, where that market uses one, the enclosures line. Applying abroad no longer means guessing.
Yours to rewrite, and to run again
Edit any sentence in the app and your changes are kept. Not the angle you wanted? Change the settings and regenerate, free within the credit, with a twenty-second pause between runs. Twelve generations per job in total, the first letter included.
One PDF, one ZIP, one clipboard button
The letter is rendered with the same template, accent color and font as your resume, so the pair reads as one envelope. Download the letter alone, take both documents in a single ZIP, or copy the text straight into an application form's letter field.
Included with every tailored resume. One-time payment, no subscription.
