Open with a results-driven summary that includes your years of experience, key methodologies, and biggest achievement.

• Lead with: your most impressive quantified result
• Reference: relevant certifications (PMP, CSM)

Core Competencies / Skills Section

Place this immediately after your summary. ATS systems scan this section heavily for keyword matches.

• List 12-16 skills in a clean, comma-separated format
• Mix hard skills (budget management, risk analysis) and tools (Jira, MS Project)
• Prioritize skills that appear in the job posting
• Include both abbreviated and full forms (PMP / Project Management Professional)

Professional Experience (reverse chronological)

This is the heart of your resume. Each role should demonstrate project leadership with measurable outcomes.

• Use format: Job Title | Company | Dates
• 4-6 bullet points per role, each starting with an action verb
• Include budget sizes, team sizes, and timelines managed
• Mention specific tools and methodologies used in context
• Quantify results: cost savings, time reduction, delivery rate

Certifications

Give certifications their own dedicated section for PM resumes. ATS systems use these as binary qualifiers.

• Format: Certification Name (Abbreviation) | Issuing Body | Year
• Place PMP, CSM, or PRINCE2 certifications first

Using a generic resume for every application

Sending the same resume to different PM roles is the #1 reason for ATS rejection. A product company and a consulting firm look for different PM skills.

Listing responsibilities instead of achievements

"Managed team meetings" tells recruiters nothing. ATS systems and hiring managers look for impact and results, not task descriptions.

Omitting certifications or burying them

PMP, CSM, and other certs are often used as hard filters by ATS. If they're hidden in your education section, the system may miss them.

Fancy formatting and multi-column layouts

Infographic resumes, two-column layouts, and creative designs break ATS parsing. The system may scramble your content or skip entire sections.

Missing or vague project metrics
